The cheerful ragtime combination of piano, banjo, tuba, and drums was first presented on record more than 80 years ago by members of the Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band. Their recording of the "Black and White Rag" caught on and helped to kickstart the first ragtime revival wave in the 1940s.

In 2024, Brian Holland (Nashville native, 3-time World Rag Time Piano player, Holland/Coots, Groovus, Sierra Stompers) with The Ragabonds revive the instrumentation with spunk and vigor. The Rhythm section of the ever-popular Sierra Stompers musicians includes Brian Holland on the piano, Katie Cavera (Sierra Stompers, Dave Stuckey's Hot House, also known as the California Sunshine Girl), who plays banjo. Paul Hagglund(a former Seattle Market Street Jazz band, Sierra Stompers, and High Sierra member), who plays tuba. Gareth Price (an L.A. hotshot, Sierra Stompers, and many LA bands, including Disneyland) adds fun spirit on drums.
